Charleston’s Shrimp Cargot with Havarti is a rich, buttery seafood dish that feels both comforting and elegant. Juicy jumbo shrimp are sautéed in garlic butter, then wrapped in a silky melted Havarti cheese sauce with a touch of lemon and heat. It’s fast, indulgent, and perfect for impressing with minimal effort.

  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic or 12 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 12 jumbo shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1/2 cup creamy Havarti cheese
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Peel and devein the shrimp if needed. Rinse under cold water and pat dry with paper towels.
  2. Melt the unsalted butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1–2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to brown it.
  4. Add the shrimp to the skillet and cook for 4–5 minutes, flipping halfway through, until pink and opaque.
  5. Reduce heat slightly and add the Havarti cheese, stirring gently until fully melted and creamy.
  6. Drizzle in the lemon juice and sprinkle with crushed red pepper flakes. Stir once more.
  7. Transfer to a serving dish and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Fresh shrimp give the best flavor, but thawed frozen shrimp can be used if necessary.
  • Avoid high heat to prevent the shrimp from becoming rubbery.
  • Gruyère or mozzarella can be substituted for Havarti if desired.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley or extra red pepper flakes for added flair.
  • Feel free to experiment with herbs like basil or chives.
