Transform thinly sliced onions into irresistibly crispy bites using an air fryer for a healthier alternative to deep frying. Enjoy these crunchy snacks as a topping, side dish, or on their own!

  • Total Time: 27 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Start by peeling the onions and slicing them into thin rings, about ¼ inch thick.
  2. Place the sliced onions in a bowl and cover them with buttermilk. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Remove the onions from the buttermilk, allowing excess liquid to drip off. Dip each ring into the flour mixture, ensuring they are well coated. Shake off any excess flour.
  5. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.
  6. Spray the air fryer basket lightly with cooking spray. Place a single layer of onion rings in the basket, ensuring they don’t overlap. Spray the tops lightly with cooking spray. Air fry for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Carefully remove the crispy onions from the air fryer and let them cool slightly on a wire rack.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free option, substitute all-purpose flour with gluten-free flour.
  • You can also experiment with different spices or add grated Parmesan for a cheesy twist.
