Ingredients
Scale
- 4 slices thick bread (brioche or challah recommended)
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk (whole or preferred alternative)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Butter or oil for cooking
Optional Add-ons:
- Fresh fruit (strawberries, blueberries, etc.)
- Chocolate chips
- Maple syrup or honey
- Chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts)
- Whipped cream
Instructions
- Prepare the cream cheese filling by combining softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Assemble the French toast sandwiches by spreading cream cheese mixture on one slice of bread and topping with another slice.
- Whisk together eggs, milk, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt in a shallow dish. Dip each sandwich into the mixture, coating both sides.
- Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat with butter or oil. Cook sandwiches for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
- Serve immediately with desired toppings like syrup, fresh fruit, whipped cream, or nuts.
Notes
- Make the cream cheese filling ahead and store in the fridge.
- Use thick, sturdy bread to avoid soggy French toast.
- Keep cooked French toast warm in a low oven if making in batches.
- Customize the filling with flavors like lemon zest, cocoa powder, or almond extract.
- Freeze cooked French toast for later by letting cool, placing on a baking sheet, freezing, then transferring to a freezer bag. Reheat in toaster or oven.
