Ingredients
Scale
- 1 batch bread dough (brioche, challah, or pizza dough)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cloves garlic, minced or roasted
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 teaspoon fresh basil or thyme (optional)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 3/4 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Soften the butter and mix it with the garlic, chopped herbs, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
- On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
- Spread the garlic herb butter over the surface of the dough.
- Sprinkle mozzarella and cheddar cheese evenly over the butter.
- Roll the dough up tightly from the long edge into a log. Pinch to seal.
- Slice the log lengthwise down the center to expose layers.
- Twist the two halves together, cut sides facing up.
- Transfer to a greased loaf pan or lined baking sheet. Let rise for 30–45 minutes.
- Brush with egg wash and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes, or until golden.
- Let cool slightly before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Use freshly shredded cheese for better melt and flavor.
- Let the dough rise fully after shaping to ensure a light texture.
- Don’t skip the egg wash—it creates that irresistible golden crust.
