A delicious and hearty Monte Cristo Breakfast Casserole that combines layers of ham, turkey, Swiss cheese, and bread, baked to sweet-and-savory perfection. Melt-in-your-mouth delicious and ideal for brunch or special mornings.

Ingredients

  • 12 slices white bread, crusts removed
  • 8 oz deli ham, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz deli turkey, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz Swiss cheese, sliced
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Raspberry jam, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with some of the melted butter.
  2. Place 6 slices of bread in the bottom of the dish.
  3. Layer half of the ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese over the bread.
  4. Add remaining bread slices, then top with remaining ham, turkey, and cheese.
  5. Whisk eggs, milk, Dijon mustard, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper until smooth.
  6. Pour egg mixture evenly over casserole, pressing gently so bread absorbs liquid.
  7. Drizzle remaining melted butter on top.
  8. Cover and rest for at least 30 minutes or overnight in the refrigerator.
  9. Bake covered for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake 15–20 minutes until golden and set.
  10. Cool slightly, dust with powdered sugar, and serve with raspberry jam.

Notes

  • Challah or brioche bread adds extra richness.
  • Can be assembled the night before and baked in the morning.
  • Add spinach or bell peppers for extra nutrition.
